Resumo

The objective of this study was to know the ability to identify outstanding male and female athletes, both nationally and internationally, based on gender, by Primary Education students in Physical Education. The sample consisted of 124 students between 10 and 13 years old (Average = 11.58, SD = 0.45), of which 54 were boys (43.54%) and 70 girls (56.45%). Data was collected through an Ad hoc questionnaire where 13 famous athletes (6 men and 7 women) were included. The results obtained showed that there are statistically significant differences in the identification of one of them (Verónica Boquete (p = 0.021), with no differences between the others. Another of the results found is that male athletes are better known for both genders than female athletes. As a conclusion to this study, we must say that, as a general rule, primary school students (both girls and boys) recognize male athletes more than female athletes, both nationally and internationally, and this may be due to the little notoriety that is given to them in the press and sports information.
