Resumo
La desigualdad económica tiene consecuencias negativas en diferentes niveles. En un nivel individual, puede afectar la percepción social y configurar características específicas que pueden generar un ambiente normativo. Los principales objetivos del presente estudio fueron (a) analizar los efectos de la desigualdad sobre las atribuciones de la conducta de consumo de otras personas y (b) ofrecer evidencias empíricas sobre la forma en que la desigualdad configura hábitos normativos del consumidor centrándose en el consumo de lujo. Este trabajo incluye tres estudios experimentales pre-registrados. En el Estudio 1 (N = 276) y en el Estudio 2 (N = 301) utilizamos un diseño entre participantes con dos condiciones experimentales (desigualdad alta frente a desigualdad baja). En el Estudio 3 invertimos el orden de las variables para identificar si el consumo de lujo desencadenaba expectativas sobre los niveles de desigualdad en un contexto específico. Los resultados mostraron que en los contextos de desigualdad económica altos (frente a bajos), los participantes infirieron más materialismo, búsqueda de estatus, ansiedad por el estatus, y consumo conspicuo en otros. Más aún, el consumo de lujo se convirtió en un predictor de desigualdad económica. Por tanto, la desigualdad económica afecta los procesos de atribución y sirve como una clave para inferir las normas descriptivas de una sociedad.
