Resumo
Forage production potential and nutritive valué of ecotypes of crimson clover {Trifolium incarnatum L.) from Galicia were studied in two locations of the wet and mild winter áreas of this región (north-west Spain), where this minor legume which is commonly associated with neutral to acidic soils, has traditionally been cultivated as green forage or hay. The average forage dry matter (DM) yields ranged from 4.2 t ha' in Mabegondo to 5.3 t ha' in Puebla de Brollón for the April harvest whereas the DM productions increased by 1 t ha' in May. No significat differences where found between ecotypes in DM yields, crude protein (CP), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and "in vitro" organic matter digestibility (IVOMD). The average CP and IVOMD valúes, in April, ranged from 167 to 185 g kg'1 and from 762 to 769 g kg' respectively depending on the location and declined to 116-113 g kg-' of PB and to 602-668 g kg1 of IVOMD in May. The results obtained suggest that if the climatic and agricultural conditions are adequated crimson clover can give DM yields quite similar to other winter forages.
