Doctor by the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela with the thesis Xeografía social e da poboación na metade sur da provincia de A Coruña unha análise a diferentes escalas 2003. Supervised by Dr. Rubén Camilo Lois González.

José Antonio Aldrey Vázquez is a European Doctor in Geography of the University of Santiago de Compostela (2003), from which he graduated with the outstanding achievement award upon graduation in 1995. Furthermore, he is an expert in Geographic Information Systems (International University of Andalucía, 2005). His main lines of research are related with demographic aspects applied to spatial planning, spatial planning for local development (international cooperation) and the elaboration of methodologies and their application in different councils of Galicia for the application to become Integral Rehabilitation Areas. He has been a reader in Regional Geographical Analysis at the University of Santiago de Compostela since 2010. Prior to this appointment, he was a lecturer in Geography at the same university and at Pablo de Olavide University (Seville), and the universities of León, Cantabria and the Autonomous University of Madrid. He has carried out teaching and research stays at University College Cork (Ireland), the Faculty of Social Sciences in Bergen (Norway) and at the University of Minho (Portugal). He teaches on numerous post-graduate and master’s degree courses, including the master’s degree in Spatial Planning and Environmental Management of the University of Barcelona; the Higher Learning Course on Urban Planning of the Escola Galega de Administración Pública; the post-graduate course on Landscape Architecture of the Fundación Juana de Vega-USC-UDC; and at the University of Santiago de Compostela in the Aula de Renovación y Rehabilitación Urbana; in the master’s degrees in Environmental Engineering; Integral Management of Cultural Heritage and the post-graduate course on Territorial Planning and Development, among others. He has more than 150 publications including books, articles and contributions in congresses, edited in numerous countries.
