Abstract

The main aim of this paper is to verify and assess the extent to which the verb uiuo, considered to be essentially non-copulative but with some uses similar to copulatives in restricted and specific contexts, possesses characteristics that indeed bring it close to copulativity. To this end, the methodology adopted will entail an exploration of semantic, lexical, syntactic and formal similarities with other copulative predicates and with the Latin copula itself. As a result, it will be possible to establish more precisely the similarities and differences between the eminently copulative and the non-copulative uses, the former being more abundant than has hitherto been acknowledged.
