Abstract

The objective of this research was to evaluate the level of knowledge in basic life support of active teachers of Physical Education in Primary Education in Galicia. 57 Primary Education Physical Education teachers (29 men (68.4%) and 18 women (31.6%), aged between 25 and 59 years (M = 41.44 SD = 9.102) participated. The results of the study show low knowledge in basic life support in adults and children, and in the use of the Automated Defibrillator, not being the case in the knowledge of the emergency telephone number. If an analysis of the knowledge between teachers is made, only have been found statistically significant differences regarding the depth of cardiac massage in children, being better in female teachers than in male teachers (p = 0.034). According to age, statistically significant differences have been found in all the dimensions studied, the knowledge being better the younger are the male and female teachers (ie Adult: ventilation-compression ratio (p = 0.008); number of compressions per minute, (p <0.001), and depth in cardiac massage (p = 0.001). Children: ventilation-compression ratio (p <0.001); number of compressions per minute, (p = 0.001). Knowledge of the sequence of use of the DESA (p <. 001). Knowledge of the emergency telephone number (p = 0.048). The Physical Education teachers do not have sufficient knowledge to face a school emergency that requires the completion of Basic Life Support, nor to teach these contents as part of the Primary Education curriculum. This knowledge is better when the teachers are younger.
