Abstract
Spain since 2004 with the generation of the regulatory framework included in the Organic Law 1/2004, of Comprehensive Protection Measures against Gender Violence, seeks to punish, prevent and eradicate gender violence and help the victims of such violence. This law formalizes the concept of gender violence and urges awareness and, in specific, the media as a secondary socializing agent to be part of the main prevention mechanisms in this regard. Therefore, the objective of this study was to analyze the evolution of the treatment of gender violence in the Spanish general press, specifically in the newspapers El País, El Mundo and ABC during the first 15 years of the 21st century, and how legislative measures and political initiatives for the eradication of gender violence have modified the representation of this phenomenon. The main advance was the replacement of generic terms such as "mistreatment" or "domestic violence" by specific terminology such as "gender violence" or "sexist violence" that contribute to visualizing and characterizing this phenomenon of social relevance.
