Resumo

This study aims to highlight a particular lack of women’s representation: that of the strong women of the Old Testament in the Spanish painting from the end of the Council of Trent to the beginning of the eighteenth century. In addition, we will explain the possible reasons for this iconographic absence, from different perspectives: political-religious, scientific, moral, and artistic, in order to demonstrate how in this omission of gender acts as a control device that articulates the development of power relationships and cultural production in a particular society.
