Abstract

In the last years the German migration policy has experienced a remarkable transformation, going from not considering Germany as country of immigration in the beginning of the 21 century to accepting this reality and realising that the social integration of the migrants goes through language learning. These changes, though, came too late for the first generation of Spanish migrants, who arrived in the Federal Republic of Germany in the 1960's and 1970's. In the last decades this people have reached retirement age, which poses new challenges. The aim of this paper is to analyse the current linguistic situation of this group from the perspective of Community Interpreting while making use of some concepts from Migration Linguistics.
