Resumen

Oral ulcers represent one of the most common mucosa! oral lesions. In mentally handicapped, the etiological diagnosis of oral ulcers is a complex process, because the medical history must be recorded indirectly and physical exam is usually difficult or even impossible. In consequence, in these patients, sorne complementary tests result particularly important to confirm the diagnosis. Although in many cases the etiology of oral ulcers remains unknown, in mentally handicapped some predisposingfactors have been identified, these including: psychological instability (stress or anxiety), neuroleptic drugs induced immunodeficiency, high prevalence of oral infections, some respiratory and digestive disorders, and vitamin and folie acid deficiencies.
