Resumo

Exemplification is a kind of hypotactic relationship between two units where one of those elements, which is more specific, provides an example of the other, which is more general. The present paper is acorpus-based study about exemplifying constructions with the markers for example and for instance inPresent-day British English. The use of both markers will be compared in order to find out whether thereis any significant difference between them. The analysis will cover several issues, such as the position ofthe markers in the exemplifying construction, the kind of syntactic units which they link or the text-typeswhere they appear. The potential combination of for example and for instance with other markers ofexemplification will also be taken into account.
