Resumo
The marine plant Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile can be a source of fibre to increase the efficiency of product costs. The aim of the present study was to assess the productive (milk production) and metabolic (energy profile and oxidative stress) effects of P. oceanica into the ration of dairy goats as a substitute for straw. With this purpose we studied three groups of goats: a group receiving the common daily ration (concentrate, hay, and barley straw at 450 g/animal/day); a second that received concentrate, hay, barley straw (225 g/animal/day) and dried leaves of P. oceanica (225 g/animal/day); and a third one where barley straw was replaced completely by dried P. oceanica leaves, receiving 450 g/animal/day. Our results show that supplementation with P. oceanica had no detrimental effects on the milk production and the metabolic status of goats. Goats fed with P. oceanica produced more milk-fat and had a lower somatic cell count in milk, and showed a decreased risk of oxidative. We conclude that goat can fed with P. oceanica without detrimental effects on milk production and health; therefore P. oceanica can be a substitute for barley starw in the nutrition of goats.
