The work addresses, from a global perspective, relevant aspects of the natureof urban trees, those that coexist with man in spaces created by him, spaces in which thecharacteristics of the environment often represents an important condition for their growthand survival. The benefits and disadvantages of trees and the principles that should guide usin their use and conservation from the perspective of modern arboriculture are highlightedfirst. The concept of compartmentalization is explained as a tree defense system, which helpsus to understand how they work against aggression and its relationship with pruning. Thegeneral principles are also addressed to assess the hazard and the risk of the trees and howto reach a certain level of security. The understanding of mechanical optimization in trees ortheir lack in certain circumstances helps to explain and predict mechanical failure. Finally, some nursery production and cultivation practices are highlighted, as well as selection ofthe appropriate species, to prevent failures in the trees and enjoy their presence in healthyconditions in an urban environment more conducive to trees and people.
