Abstract
Pneumediastinum is a complication secondary to the increase in intraalveolar pressure that causes alveolar rupture and leaking of air from the bronchial tree towards the mediastinum. The possibility of developing said pathology is a consequence of respiratory infections that occur with intense cough and give rise to forced Valsalva maneuvers, as in the case of the coronavirus disease. The diagnosis is based on imaging tests, which show the extrapulmonary air. However, the physical examination is generally very suggestive. Except for the development of a tension pneumopericardium or pneumothorax, pneumomediastinum is a complication associated with a good prognosis. Treatment is based on analgesia and oxygen therapy.
