Resumo

Baptism created a bond between the baptised, the parents and the godparents. This bond had more than a symbolic value because it was for life and it created social networks. In addition, baptism was the ceremony in which the new born was endowed with a name and an individual, family, religious and social identity. We intend to analyse the evolution and internal characteristics of the institution of spiritual kinship through the Modern Age in the region of Chantada, in the South of the province of Lugo. To achieve this, we examine several factors that influenced the choice of a person as godparent. The name, the most visible of this link, is also an object of our analysis
