Abstract

The aim of this text is to clarify concepts linked to the study of voice and vocal education that many times raise doubts or are used inaccurately: ‘extension’, ‘range’, ‘tessitura’, ‘register’, and ‘ambit’; and also to offer different theoretical-practical examples for classifying children’s voices that may inspire teachers when selecting and/or arranging repertoires. Once revised various academic texts written by international references, we conclude that ‘extension’ and ‘range’ are synonyms and encompass all the sounds that, with or without vocal quality, we can emit with our voice. As for ‘tessitura’, it includes the sounds we can emit with control and quality. This is divided into three kinds of ‘registers’, which cover homogeneous sounds based on the producing mechanism. And finally, ‘ambit’ refers to the existing interval between the lowest and the highest note of a song
