Resumo

The main goal of this paper is the analysis of nouns as a word class with valency status, as well as the possible realizations of their specific complements. We focus on a discussion of some difficulties in the analysis of noun complementation with expressions in sentence form. After consulting grammars and dictionaries, this contribution will focus on the syntactic and semantic description of completive sentences, of expressions like so-called appositions, and other related phenomena. It also pays attention to the discussion about direct and indirect speech as a possible specific complementation of nouns, as well as the criteria for their formal realization. Finally, the study pursues the goal of offering a catalog of open questions about noun valency, taking into account sentences as complements.
