Zusammenfassung

We present a palaeoenvironmental reconstruction of a sector of Ría de Vigo (Spain). We characterized a pedo-sedimentary sequence infilling a former Roman salt mine. Physicochemical, mineralogical, and geochemical (elemental composition) analyses were performed and complemented with radiocarbon age dating of selected samples. The sequence presents an alternation of sandy and silty-clay layers with large physico-chemical differences. The results indicate a progressive advance of continental environment as a consequence of the reconfiguration of the coastline from BC II to AD III centuries, when salt mine activity ceased. The coast sector evolved from a highly anthropized marsh environment towards a more continentalized one, dominated by dune formations. At the same time, changes in the sedimentation coincide with some major late Holocene climatic changes.
