Resumo

The labyrinth of love is a recurrent symbol in Western literature since Petrarch and Boccaccio. This article presents an analysis of the function and the meaning of the labyrinth of love in three plays: El laberinto de amor, by Miguel de Cervantes; La prueba de los ingenios, by Félix Lope de Vega; and Changes or Love in a Maze, by James Shirley. These plays are analyzed after a brief introduction to the labyrinth of love. In them, the use of this symbol is influenced by the dramatic conventions and by the characteristics of the garden labyrinths that spread through Europe from the Renaissance onwards.
