Abstract

The reflectarray antennas have attracted interest in applications such as satellite communications. This justifies the effort in the development of techniques for their design. This thesis approaches the two different issues of the problem: the solution of phase synthesis to obtain the desired radiation pattern, and the design of the reflectarray elements to synthesize the required phase distribution. Different heuristic methods to solve the phase synthesis have been analyzed and parametric studies have been carried out, making it possible to demonstrate that, for the problem at hand, there are two methods more efficient: Particle Swarm Optimization and Simulated Annealing. The problem concerning the analysis and design of the reflectarray elements has been addressed by an electromagnetic analysis method based on the Conjugate Gradient algorithm in combination with the FFT. Some modifications of classic structures have been proposed such as the concentric rings, evolutionary patch-ring structures or ring-patch hybrid structures. The design and measurement of several prototypes has been carried out in order to check experimentally the proper operation of the design process and the geometries studied.
