Resumo

The aim of the present investigation is to analyze the parental break up impact in the children relationships with other family members, specially the relationship with the grandparents. For that, a quasi experimental study was designed in which 60 children form families with and without parental break up were evaluated. The children aged between the first year of life and 6 years (M=3.53; SD=1.49). The information about the family situation was obtained from a semi structured interview. The results show that grandparents are the habitual alternative children caregiver to the parents. The diminution of the relationship of the children with the grandparents was found in the families with parental break up, and statically significant differences were found (Z=- 2.911; p=0.004). Regarding the evidences, it’s necessary an appropriate approach to the break up parental process, in social and legal context, in order to reduce the negative effects in the children relationships with the family members and to defend their visitation right.
