Abstract
This paper analyses the innovation behaviour of privatized firms in the Spanish case, and it points out the reduction of their R&D effort, because of their preference to short term profit and shareholders creation value. Privatization implies a shift in objectives and management of firms, which may affect seriously their innovation activity, due to shifts in strategic targets. The empirical evidence suggests that the relevant contribution of state-owned enterprises to innovation suffer a significant impact from the privatization process.
