Resumen

The foundational dataset for this Thesis is an original paleographic digital edition that makes it possible to explore, in innovative and flexible ways, the manuscript tradition -and transmission- of the Galician-Portuguese lyric. The edition includes a selection from the corpus of songs available in the three main witnesses to this Galician-Portuguese poetic school: the Cancioneiro da Ajuda, the Cancioneiro da Biblioteca Nacional de Lisboa, and the Cancioneiro da Biblioteca Vaticana. A core objective of the research was to design a methodologically original ecdotic model that could enable the organization and presentation of the information obtained by systematically comparing the manuscript witnesses. Only once an appropriate ecdotic edition of the manuscript evidence is in place is it possible to focus the study on the analysis of many types of linguistic and textual variation.A rigorous collatio of the texts was implemented and a digital edition was constructed to support the exploration of the data. Using a pipeline development model, descriptive and analytic markup was added to the corpus in stages, following a methodology that defines the synoptic edition and is fully TEI compliant. This format enables the systemic exploration and analysis of textual variation by supporting powerful and flexible automated juxtaposition and comparison of readings within the codices. Specifically, the edition interface makes it possible to query, organize, and retrieve immediately any data that is required to analyze individual types of linguistic variation and associated phenomena–such as those related to the manuscript tradition and its stratification. The data in this edition of the Galician-Portuguese poetic heritage, and the original interface through which researchers engage with the data, provide both synchronic and diachronic perspectives on the language of the troubadours and on the textual tradition of their practice. Additionally, beyond the immediate textological goals that motivated the project, the research also contributes a new and valuable dataset for Historical Linguistics, with multiple examples that illustrate different linguistic phenomena (primarily phonetic and morphological, but also lexical and syntactic). Moreover, as was mentioned above, because of the close relationship between linguistic and textual phenomena, a linguistic analysis of the kind undertaken here is a prerequisite to a rigorous examination of the manuscript tradition under study. Thus, the organized perspective on variants and on patterns of variation available in the edition affords a new type of access to primary information about the multiple written sources that come together in the songbooks, and about the literary practice of the scriptoria that produced them.
