Abstract
This paper deals with the meaning and the textual behavior of the German proverb Reden ist Silber, Schweigen ist Gold ("Speech is silver, silence is gold") and its Spanish equivalent En boca cerrada no entran moscas ('in a closed mouth, flies do not enter'). The main goal is to compare the pragmatic functions played by each proverb, as well as the type of modifications they admit in discourse. For this purpose, Wulf & Oesterreicher's theory of "conceptual scripturality and conceptual orality" is taken into account.
