Abstract
The European Gender Equality Index from the European Institute for Gender Equality, that provides measures for 2005, 2010 and 2012, warns of a general slowing down in the trend toward greater gender equality across Europe; indeed, it shows a setback in various Member States. This piece reviews the evolution of the EU gender policy; it sheds light on some of its pitfalls; and it poses a question about how to reframe EU gender policy in order to improve its impact.
