Resumo
A captive-bred, juvenile female Eurasian eagle-owl (Bubo bubo) was presented with a focus of ulceration and necrosis located in palatine mucosa adjacent to the choana, hematochezia, anemia (hematocrit 25%), and hyporexia. Culture of the oral lesion revealed a mixed bacterial flora considered saprophytic. After treatment with acyclovir (80mg/kg bid PO), enrofloxacin (10mg/kg bid IM) and itraconazole (10mg/kg sid PO), antibiotic, and anti-fungal treatment stomatitis healed leaving a slightly depressed, re-epitelized area. A few days later the animal was presented with vomiting and depression and did not respond to therapy. Necropsy revealed hepatomegaly with multiple white foci, and whitish lesion in the cardiac vertex. Histopathologic examination revealed proliferative cloacitis and bursitis with abundant intralesional cryptosporidia, as well as systemic bacterial embolism compatible with streptoccocosis causing necrotizin and/or thromboembolic lesions in several organs. The hsitopathological diagnosis of cryptosporidiosis was confirmed by direct immunofluorescence on paraffin-embedded tissues. Cryptosporidiosis has been infrequently described in raptors, and respiratory infections appear to predominate in these species. This appears to be the first description of crytosporidial proliferative cloacitis in Eurasian eagle-owls.
