Resumo

The effectiveness of grass buffer strips against polluted runoff, generated by means of simulated rainfall on a sloped pasture, after having spread 125 rrr ha"' or 250 irr ha of cattle slurry on two well defined áreas were studied. One, 11 and 25 days after slurrying, physicochemical and bacterial parameters were analyzed on runoff samples. The possible effect of the double dose of slurry was not evident. One day after slurrying, it was clear that the degree of attenuation of pollutant's levéis was greater as was the buffer strip length; in the two subsequent sampling events it was not so clear, because of the drift of pollutants along the strip itself. The percent removal of pollutants was high, mainly on the two first meters of buffer strip. Positive correlations were found between % runoff and mass levéis transported along the strips. Attenuation was not very evident on bacterial counts; even in the third sampling event, levéis of faecal bacteria were high.
