Resumo

The objective of this paper is to analyse how the overexploitation phenomena in the European Union led to the development of a bathymetric and geographical expansion of the European fishing fleet towards Latin American fishing grounds. The specific goals of this paper are: a) to examine the status of the main commercial species in the North Atlantic Ocean, in particular the North Seacod (Gadus morhua) stock; b) to know the presence of the foreign fishing fleets in Latin American fishing grounds; c) to understand the role of the fishing strategies developed by the distant water fishing fleets by focusing on the Argentinean hake (Merluccius hubbsi) and the Peruvian anchovy (Engrasulis rigens).
