Abstract
Consanguineous marriage has been very common since the fi rst stages of human evolution. Even nowadays it has been estimated that consanguineous couples and their progeny represent 10.4% of the global human population. It has been observed that the off spring of endogamy unions has a higher probability of suff ering from recessive Mendelian diseases as well as complex multifactorial diseases such as cancer, schizophrenia or depression. Until now it has been diffi cult to study the eff ect of high inbreeding rates as data is not available. Nevertheless, the analysis of the European royal dynasties of the Early Modern Age had provided new insights.
