Abstract
Given the magnitude and characteristics of the fight against forest fires in Galicia (Spain), the aerial resources play a starring role in tasks such as surveillance or extinguishment. As an operational aid, an Automatic Vehicle Location System (AVL) devoted to the real-time tracking of these aircrafts is hosted by the Government of Galicia (Xunta de Galicia) since 1999. The AVL system, which is based on GPS, mobile communications networks and geographical information systems, manages a wide cartographic database that has progressively grown to a size that requires systematic data integration in order to provide the user with significant information. Our main goal now is to expand our AVL system attaching a dedicated decision support module that will trace the progress of active wildfires and characterize the working environment by means of static hazard indexes computed by Multicriteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) techniques.
