Resumo

We compare the illusory line motion (when a small visual stimulus or cue precedes a line displayed instantaneously to the right or left of that stimulus, the observer reports a line propagating from the cued end) and the real motion of a line by measuring the effects of both movement types upon performance in a primary task. The participants had to identify the motion direction of a spot that moved forming a line and which was flanked for another two lines that moved in a real or illusory fashion. We found that both real and apparent motion of the flankers interfered on real motion perception of the target line. This finding suggests that the same perceptual mechanisms may be involved in both kinds of motion, although it is advisable to remember here that the existence of similar effects is a necessary condition to suppose similar processes but it is not a sufficient condition
