Abstract

The aim of this paper is to refute present formal analyses of the phenomenon of right-dislocation, and to defend the view that rightdislocation is merely a short-distance referential relationship in discourse. It follows from this that only pragmatic / semantic factors (as opposed to structural ones) should be invoked to account for the peculiarities of this construction type. It also follows that right-dislocation should not be kept apart from the grammatical description of other “detached” NPs.
