Resumo
Advanced glycated end-products (AGEs) and their receptor (RAGE), the main biomarkers of the AGE/RAGE axis, have been involved in vascular pathophysiology. For this reason, it becomes necessary the development of new studies to analyze the role of the AGE/RAGE axis in the atherosclerotic disease. The objectives of this work was to analyze the implications of the AGE/RAGE axis and it possible prognostic value in the context of coronary heart disease by using to cohorts of patients: one with chronic heart failure and the other with an acute coronary syndrome. On the other hand, this work also analyze, in a in vitro model of endothelial cells, the molecular pathways involved in the effects of AGEs, as well as the effects of the inhibition of RAGE. In short, project approaches a novel topic and it allows to get very useful information regarding the use of the AGE/RAGE axis as a new diagnostic element to assess the severity of chronic heart failure and, in less grade, of an acute coronary syndrome. Additionally, the study provides new targets or therapeutic approaches for both pathological conditions, a health problem producing an elevated rate of death and invalidity in the developed countries.
